We would like to welcome all our families to another exciting year in our Dual Immersion program at Hedenkamp. Our goal is to create bilingual and biliterate students. We value your ongoing support of our Dual Immersion program at Hedenkamp!
Our students will again have access to an engaging online tool to help them develop their Spanish skills. Students not only have the opportunity to use this tool in the classroom, they can use it as often as they would like to from the comfort of home. Please encourage your son or daughter to use this tool regularly to build their academic skills in Spanish. You may access the program at: http://www.pipoclub.com/colegios/juegos/ . Students should enter the following id colegio: 1278 and the following contraseña: hedenkamp. They then click validar, after that they can look for their name on our class list and begin using the software. Please let us know if you need any assistance accessing the software.
Dual Immersion Grows
The 2011-2012 School Year will bring changes to our Dual Immersion Program. First, we have continued to add the third kindergarten class. Next year, we will have three kindergarten and three first grade Dual Immersion Classrooms.
Our fourth, fifth and sixth grade Immersion Program are also undergoing some changes. To better meet the needs of our students in both English and Spanish, each Dual Immersion Teacher will be partnered with an English Teacher. Together, they will plan, organize and deliver instruction to your students.
At the Back to School Nights, both our Dual Immersion Teachers and the English Only Teachers will share their plans for the school year. We believe this structure will add greatly to your students’ growth in both English and Spanish.
To learn more about Dual Language Education and to view a great presentation on Dual Immersion Education, please click on the San Diego County Office of Education. Go to the presentation by Dr. Kathryn Lindholm-Leary called Critical Components of a Successful DL Program: Research and Implications.
Another great site is The California Two Way Languages Home Page. There, you will find a wealth of information about Two Way Immersion Classes, including frequently asked questions, research on best practices and guiding principles. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact Hedenkamp Elementary School.
Welcome and Bienvenido!
Hedenkamp’s Dual Immersion Program continues to grow. Again, we will begin the 2011-2012 school year with three dual immersion kindergarten classes. And, because of our three kindergarten classes this year, we will have three first grade dual immersion classes for 2011-2012 school year.
We are also slightly changing the organizational structure of our 4th, 5th and 6th grade classes. Next year, each dual immersion teacher will partner with an English Teacher. Together, they will design and deliver instruction to both the English Only Students and the Dual Immersion Students.
Dual Immersion Education is becoming more and more desirable throughout the United States, with California leading the way. Check out this Los Angeles Times Article for more information.
